SI NORTH CANTERBURY
Est. 1969
Established in 1969, Soroptimists North Canterbury is a friendly, passionate group of local women who work together to better the lives of women and children in our local community. We volunteer time and expertise to raise funds for good causes, and enjoy fun and fellowship at our social events, as part of a global network of dedicated women.
Our Christmas Tree Festival in Rangiora is a well known event bringing joy to hundreds of visitors each year, and supporting a local charity, with a new one chosen each year. It also brings businesses, schools and non profit groups together, combining sponsorship with creativity through the beautifully decorated trees showcasing local organisations.
Our monthly dinner meeting features interesting guest speakers, all with a focus on assisting women to find the help and support to live their best lives. Our recent promotion with toilet door posters is one example of reaching out into our community and raising awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms, with information on where to find further advice.
We also support a Youth Club at Rangiora High School, introducing them to the rewards of giving service and making a difference in the world they will inherit. These young leaders of tomorrow are an embodiment of "girls can do anything", and we encourage them to reach their full potential.

Key Projects and Initiatives

BRAVE
Our North Canterbury Soroptimist group hosted BRAVE, an organisation led by a former Miss NZ, Jessica Tyson. This organisation raises awareness about sexual violence among youth in Aotearoa and provides tools and support for young people affected by sexual harm. Senior girls from 3 local high schools were given the opportunity to attend a talk and a physical safety session.
A dinner was held for BRAVE members and those who organised the event. We will work further with the local high school to promote a Soroptimist group at the school.
