 Soroptimist International of Christchurch:
.Farnley Reserve Planting

Soroptimist International of Christchurch has an ongoing partnership with the Friends of Farnley which showcases their dedication to environmental conservation and community engagement.

Farnley Reserve Restoration

Located along Centaurus Road in Cashmere, Farnley Reserve stands as a testament to the club’s dedication to environmental preservation. Created two decades ago as a project initiative by SI Christchurch, the reserve plays a vital role in regulating the water quality of the local river system.

Preserving Biodiversity and Water Quality

Farnley Reserve, nestled beside the Heathcote River, faces challenges such as flooding and invasive plant species. However, it provides a crucial mix of habitats for birds, plants, and insects. The reserve not only shows the runoff of rainwater into the river but also acts as a natural filter, removing impurities before water enters the river system.

Monthly Volunteer Efforts

Volunteers, including SI Christchurch members and the Friends of Farnley, come together monthly to weed, mulch, and plant native vegetation. This collaborative effort helps manage the effects of flooding, control invasive species, and create a thriving ecosystem that benefits both nature and the local community.

A Centennial Celebration: Planting the Seeds of Legacy

In celebration of Soroptimist International’s 100 years, SI Christchurch planted a kahikatea (New Zealand white pine) tree in Farnley Reserve. This symbolic act not only marks the club’s centennial but also underscores the longstanding relationship between SI Christchurch and the reserve.

Preserving History, Engaging Community

Club archives were utilised to create a comprehensive history of the reserve, now available online (Farnley Reserve Timeline). This initiative not only preserves the legacy of the reserve but also serves as a tool to engage local community volunteers in caring for this cherished area.

Success in Regeneration

The restoration project at Farnley Reserve has been a resounding success, bringing the community together as volunteers and allowing Soroptimists involved in the reserve’s creation to share their story. This hands-on approach to environmental conservation not only benefits the natural habitat but also fosters a sense of community pride and connection.

Testimonial: A Century of Impact

“Today, the Soroptimists of Christchurch, with just a little help from the Friends of Farnley, planted a kahikatea tree near the eel circle to mark the 100th year of Soroptimist International. It was great to help this group of women continue their contact.”

Soroptimist International of Christchurch remains committed to nurturing nature, sustaining communities, and leaving a legacy of environmental stewardship for generations to come.
