Soroptimist International of Kapiti Coast:
Youth and Community Fishing Day
Soroptimist International of Kapiti is proud to contribute to creating positive experiences for young people through community-based initiatives. One project that they support is the Youth and Community Fishing Day, organised in collaboration with the Waikanae Boating Club and the local Coast Guard.
A Commitment to Connection:
This annual event provides an opportunity for youth facing challenging circumstances to experience the thrill of being out on the ocean, learning about fishing, and connecting with nature. SI Kapiti's dedication to this project stems from its mission to uplift and inspire young people within the community.
Planning and Preparation:
In January 2023, SI Kapiti began planning for the event held on March 11, 2023. The club was tasked with preparing and serving breakfast, snack bags for the boats, and a BBQ lunch for approximately 120 participants, caregivers, boat skippers, crew members, and Coast Guard officials. With support from local sponsors, such as Waikanae Butchery providing donated meat and Kapiti New World supplying additional items, the team was well-equipped to serve hearty meals and snacks.
Team Effort:
A dedicated group of 11 SI Kapiti members came together to prepare a cooked breakfast, including scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, spaghetti, and toast. Snack bags containing fresh fruit, water bottles, and sunblock were readied for participants to enjoy on the boats. The lunch menu featured a BBQ with fresh salads and bread rolls, ensuring everyone had a nutritious and satisfying meal.
Memorable Experiences:
The smiles on the participants’ faces and the feedback from families underscored the day's success. Many young attendees expressed their excitement, calling it "the best day ever," and letters of gratitude highlighted the positive impact of the event. The experience also fostered connections between the families and boat skippers, leading to future fishing opportunities. The donation of fresh fish for family meals was a particularly valued outcome, easing household food costs for many.
Recognition and Continued Partnership:
At the club's April meeting, a representative from the Waikanae Boating Club attended to thank the club for its dedication and presented a $500 NZD donation to support our efforts. The club was also invited to partner again in 2024, marking the beginning of a continuing and meaningful tradition.
Soroptimist International Kapiti Coast remains committed to fostering joy, community bonds, and positive change through projects like the Youth and Community Fishing Day.
